Post #2: Chapters 1 and 2: In Chapter 1 it quotes, "The Radleys, welcome anywhere in town, kept to themselves, a prediliction (a tendency) unforgivable in Maycomb" What does this mean to you? Is Sioux Center the same? Later, regarding the same issue, Atticus tells Jem to "mind his own business and let the Radleys mind theirs." What does he mean by that? What does it mean to be "invisible"? Who in this novel is "invisible"? Do you agree with Atticus regarding "invisibility"? In what ways? What are the arguments against Atticus's way of thinking?

I think that quote is saying that because the Radleys never spoke to anyone, didnt socialize, and kept to themselves, they are thought of as a weird, creepy family. In Maycomb everybody usually socializes and gets along with each other, but when one family comes along who doesnt do that, then everybody is mad at them and doesn't forgive them or except them. In some ways I think Sioux Center is the same, but in others I think Sioux Center is getting a lot better at accepting people or families for who they are. I think Atticus was telling Jem to not worry about what the Radleys are doing wrong and just let them be who they are, and instead worry about his own business. By "invisible" I think they mean nobody pays attention to them or cares so much about them. The Radleys are always locked up in their house so they basically are "invisible" most of the time. Mrs. Radley and Boo Radley are both invisible because they never come outside when anybody can see them. I do agree with Atticus regarding invisiblity because nobody ever really sees them or socializes with them, and it's probably better to just let them stay that way instead of making them change.
ReplyDeleteTo me, the quote is saying that just because the Radleys didn't ever want to talk to anyone, didn’t necessarily mean that they weren’t nice people, they just didn’t really want to draw attention to themselves. They just liked to keep to themselves and avoid people. In small communities such as Maycomb or Sioux Center, people want to know who their neighbors are because we are judgmental people, even though we shouldn’t be. We want to know if we should be nice to our neighbors, or if we should just avoid them completely. Atticus just tells Jem that he should take his nose out of where it doesn’t belong, and not be doing what he shouldn’t be doing. I agree with Atticus in how he describes invisibility to Jem because he is saying that just because the Radleys don’t want to be involved in the community, doesn’t mean that the children can be poking around and nosy, when they shouldn’t be. The person that I think is invisible in this novel is Arthur Radley because he was never really seen or heard of, especially ever since he got sent away. So, just because you think someone is unfriendly, doesn’t mean it is always true, they may just not like to be open to everyone.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Carrigan, in that Atticus doesn’t think the children should be allowed to go wherever they want to, they should just leave the Radleys as how they want to be, and that is left alone. Sioux Center always tries to be friendly to their neighbors, but sometimes it can be difficult to accept who you live next to because they might not be like the “average” families that they are used to being around. The most polite thing to do is just to accept how your neighbors are, or in the case of the novel, just accept how the Radleys are because they might turn out differently than what you were expecting.
ReplyDeleteI think it means that they don’t participate in many things and are looked down upon the people of Maycomb. Maycomb is town that people participate but the Radleys choose not to. In Sioux Center I’m sure there are many people that don’t participate in many things and keep to themselves. Atticus means to worry about our own lives and don’t worry about what their life is like. I think Invisible means that you aren’t doing anything and no one is caring about you. The Radleys are invisible because no one ever sees them. I agree with Atticus because you should worry about your own life and not about anyone else.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Katlynn because i think Arthur Radely is the invisbible novel in this storie because he is never seen. I also think though that the whole Radely family is invisible because they are never seen and they dont do much in town.
ReplyDeleteI think someone who keeps things to themselves are shy or just wants to be alone. In sioux center I think it does occur because everybody hide something that they dont want to tell people.Aticus ment that Gem should not be trying to find out what Blue Radely's are doing. To be invisible is to not be seen. Blue Radely would be invisble. I would agree because some people dont want people to find things out and ruin their life. Sometimes in bad situation its good for neighbors to help each other.
ReplyDeleteI think this quote means that people welcome the Radleys, but they don't hang out with them and the Radleys don't care that they don't. No one liked the Radleys because everyone gets along with each other in Maycomb. I do think Sioux Center is the same. More people are coming to Sioux Center and aren't socializing with everyone so people don't get to know who they are. He means that if we dont get in their way the wont get in our way. Invisible means no one pays attention to you, even if your in the same room. Boo Radley is the one that is invisible. I agree with Atticus in that no one sees them so they are invisible. The Finchs should try to be friendly with the Radleys.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Peter that Boo and Mr. Radley are invisible in this novel, and that neighbors should try to help each other.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Katlynn and Kyle in saying that in small towns like Sioux Center and Maycomb it is hard to accept people for who they really are. I also agree with Peter saying that some people have something to hide or something they dont want people to know, but most small town folks like to dig their noses too far into other peoples buisness.
ReplyDeleteI think this quote means that the Radleys were welcomed by the people of Maycomb to take part in any activities or other things, but they just stayed home all the time didn't socialize. This was looked down upon because everyone in Maycomb liked to socialize and keep in touch with everyone else. I think Sioux Center is different because we like to know what is going on, but we usually let people do as they please and keep to themselves if they want to. Atticus means that jem and the other kids should let the Radleys do as they please and not bother them. Invisibility means that the Radleys, in a way, don't even exist because they are never seen and don't talk to people about their lives. Boo Radley is invisible because no one ever sees him come out, so rumors are started about him like stabbing his mother in the leg. I agree with Atticus because you should let the Radleys do as they please and not bother them because you never know what they could do to you.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ross when he says the Finches should try to be friendly to the Radleys, because it never hurts to try to socialize. However, if the Radleys don't want anything to do with them or even get mad at them for wanting to be friendly, then they should stop trying to befriend the Radleys. I also agree with Peter when he said some people just want to be alone, and you should respect their privacy.
ReplyDeleteI think it means that the Radley's were very personal people, and maybe didn't feel comfortable living in Maycomb due to the steriotyping. I think that people need to really get to know someone before they judge who/what they think that person is. Sioux Center is a lot like this, because people just assume that the person is "bad" or "poor" without really learning their story. I think that quote means to mind what is going on in your life and to not worry about everyone elses life...they can handle it on their own. It bothers me when people dig into conversations about something that doesn't even concern them or pertain to anything that they need to know. I think that being "invisibe" can have a couple different meanings. You can be invisible by choice or by people making you invisible. For example. The Radleys are invisible by choice and by people making them, because they isolate themselves, but then other people don't get to know them and judge their way of living and don't really want to learn about them...therefore, invisible. I agree with Atticus because the Radleys are invisible in thier town becuase they don't put themselves in positions where they get attention.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ty, because people in Sioux Center are "nosy" with different subjects, but they let people do their own thing. I also agree with Ross because people ignore different people and don't get to know them before they judge them in everything that they do.
ReplyDeleteI think this quote means that the Radley's could have been socialized with the town but they chose not to be.Sioux Center is similiar as Maycomb.People here leave people alone if they chose not to socialize.Aticus is saying that to leave the Radley's alone and let them do what they want with their life.Invisible means that you know the people are there but they never socialize.I agree with Aticus, you just have to leave people alone if they want to be left alone. The Radley's are invisible so far in the book.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ross.People in Sioux Center today who just moved here may not want to socialize with people until they get adjusted with the town and the culture of people here.Meanwhile we have to leave them alone.
ReplyDeleteThis quote to me means that the Radleys are welcome anywhere in the town, but they don't talk to anyone. They just go to town for a while then they go back home. No, I don't think Sioux Center is the same because some people talk to other people when they go to town. Atticus means by this quote that to not mock what the Radleys are doing because if the Radleys were mocking you, you would not like that and that everyone should just mind their own business, not everyone needs to know what you are going through. Invisible to me means you barley have any friends and not everyone sees you there you just feel invisible sometimes, like you are doing nothing right. In this book I think The Radleys are invisible because they don't have many friends and they barley go out.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Anna because I like what she said about not judging the person before you get to know them and I agree with her.
ReplyDeleteI believe that Atticus ment for Jem and Scout to stop going onto someone else's property, especially if they don't want them on it in the first place. To be invisible, you know about the caracter, but never see that person, or what they did. I believe that Mrs. Radley is the invisible person. You see Mr. Radley, and they even found things from Arthur Radley, but you never see Mrs. Radley. I believe that Atticus was right in telling his kids to stay out of the Radley place because Mr. Radley doesn't like them on his property. I can see no reasonable argument against Atticus's way of thinking.
ReplyDeleteThis quote means to me that the Radley's never socialize with others from Maycomb. Many people thought that the Radley's were a strang family like did odd things in many different ways. In Maycomb mostly everyone was friendly and loved to talk to their neighbors. Sioux Center is like Maycomb because people want to know who they live by and may judge them. But at the same time i think Sioux Center is not that much like Maycomb because some families are trying to accept how other families live. Atticus means by that is mind your own business and stop worrying about the Radley's. The family that i think is "invisible" is the Radley because they never wanted to be seen outside of their house.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ashley Harn becuase they shouldn't mock the Radley's because they know its not the right thing to do.
ReplyDeleteI think it means that the Radleys could go anywhere but they chose to stay in their house and not socialize with the world outside. I do feel like in ways sioux center could be the same, because there is certian areas where certain people hang out at. Generally people hang out with the same people at the same places in Sioux Center. I usually hang out with the same group of people in generally the same places.I think he menas that the Radleys aren't buggin you or your business so don't worry about them, just worry about your own business. I think in the book invisible means not seen not heard.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what Ross says about the quote, but I disagree with what his opionion is on Sioux Center related to the quote. I also agree with what Ross said about being invisible
ReplyDeletei agree with ross when he said the finches should be friendly and talk to the radely's because opening up to people isnt bad
ReplyDeletePeople just want to now what people are doing. People grow up with family and people are all related or have family hear. People now your life based on your family. Families are clews and they talk about everything. In younger people they just need to go on line and you can now everything something about knowing what people do attracts people? Getting out is great but is you rather stay in that’s ok you don’t need people to tell you what you should or shouldn’t do. People just are different not all need to do the same thing just stay away. Boo Radley is invisible he doesn’t get out of his home. I agree with Atticus people need to diced to be with other s and if they don’t want to be than the people need to live them alone.
ReplyDeleteI think that the family is welcomed by all of the people in the town but they don't go out and do much around town because they don't like interaction with other people. They don't participate in many activities. I think that in some ways this could be a good thing because it seems like in Sioux Center, people are always wondering about other people's buisness, and sometimes they just need to worry about their own problems
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jordan because I usually hang out with the same group of people, and in usually the same places most of the time. I also agree with Ross because I think that the Finch's should try and talk to the Radley's and get to know them.
ReplyDeleteI think this quote is saying that because the Radley's keep to themselves and don't get out and do everything with the rest of the town, they are thought of as weird and creepy like. Maybe they just like being together as a family and don't like socializing with others, maybe they are shy. In ways some people could think of Sioux Center as this because people are very nosey in Sioux Center and get into other peoples business a lot. I think that the town should just let them be and don't worry about them. Something good could also come out of it for someone to reach out to the Radleys and see if they need anything instead of putting a label on them.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ross, the Finches could be the ones to step out of their comfort zone and try and help the Radleys out and see if they are in need of anything and don't put a label on them like everyone else in the town.
ReplyDeleteto me this means that they just keep to themselfs and are not that social. it not a bad thing just they were liked and welcomed any where, just didnt want to go anywhere. and that was werid for this town. sioux center is some what like that for the reasons that most people are welcome where ever. but when Jems father tells him to mind his own it reminds me ofsioux center because alot of people are nosy. invisabel is to notbe seen by anyone. i agree that they should act invisable.

i agree with ryan when he said they were all welcome just not wanting to interact with others. many people are like that and i dont see anything wrong with that.
ReplyDeletei think the people of maycomb always think that the radleys want to be alone all the time so that sets them apart from the other "normal" families. so this it why they make fun of them and make them different.
ReplyDeletei agree with anna because some families just want to be alone and dont like to be as social as some families.
ReplyDeleteI don't think there is a problem with never coming out into the public and socializing with your neighbors, because some people just don't like being socialable.
ReplyDeletei would agree with ty because people in sioux center always want to know what other people are doing.
ReplyDeleteI think it just means that the Radleys kept to themselves. They didnt really like talking to other people. Sioux center is kinda the same but yet its not. We are getting more.....welcoming to others or new people. Also Atticus is saying to just not bother them, like if they dont want to talk its their choice. Boo Radley is invisble i think. No one ever sees him. The argument against what Atticus said is that sometimes if you talk to people that are shy and try and make them comfortable they will start talking more
ReplyDeleteI think that maybe, they get treated they way they do is because maybe when they first moved there they were that one family that is different, kids got made fun of in school and eventually it go around town and people just assumed that it was the truth. They probably stay hidden in their house because they don’t want to have to deal with the hurt and the rumors. I had the same experience when I first moved to Iowa, because I was the different kid. People weren’t used to me, I didn’t play sports, I dressed different, and I also had a bit of an accent that people weren’t used to. But I pushed through it and now I would say I get along well with everyone, so yes Sioux Center might have a small problem with it but not a big one its more of a getting used to problem.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Taylor. Because if you get treated bad then you will not want to go outside the house anymore. They might not want to come out of their house because some people right when they see them they make stereotypical comments. And the dad when he says they are "invisible" maybe he means by not feeling loved, they feel like they aren't wanted in the town.
ReplyDeleteI think this quote tries to tell us that the Radleys arent necessarily different from anyone in Maycomb by having their own privacy. In my opinion i think you dont necessarily need to socialize with anyone in the community you live in. because its pretty much optional if you want to. I dont think anyone should be forced to socialize & be a part of our community just because they feel like they have to or that is the standard. I feel that Sioux Center doesnt have that problem because mostly everyone knows each other by school, religion, or simply just being related.
