#3 - Education and To Kill a Mockingbird

While still advocating that educated minds (like Atticus's, his brother's, and Calpurnia's) are powerful and help prevent ignorance (such as racism and prejudice), "the novel's apparent conclusion about education is that the most important lessons are those of sympathy and understanding and that a sympathetic understanding approach is the best way to teach these lessons. In this way, Atticus's ability to put himself in his children's shoes makes him an excellent teacher, while Miss Caroline's rigid commitment to the educational techniques she learned in college make her ineffective and even dangerous (Spark Notes To Kill a Mockingbird)." Do you agree with this conclusion about education and learning? What are the most effective learning situations for you? Do you agree that Atticus is a good teacher? How important to you is the education you recieve at Sioux Center High School? Why do you think so many whites in the 1930's were so afraid of African Americans receiving an education?

  1. I agree with this education with learning. I learn best when I have experiences with what I am doing and work hands on experiences. Yes, Atticus is a good teacher, he teaches his kids about respect and not to judge people by their color. Each parts of school are more important than others. Like Ag is more important to me because that’s what interests me and that’s what I hope to be in when I get out of school. If they get educated they could steal your job and the owners could pay them less because they will work harder for less money.

  2. i agree with atticus's way of learning and how he relates to his kids when he teaches. i learn best with hands on learning and when teachers put the information in a fun way to learn, that makes it alot easier for me to learn and makes me want to learn.yes i agree atticus is a great teacher. my education is pre important to me or some of it anyway.they were scared to loose there jobs and let them become equal as them.

  3. I agree with Tyler. I also tend to learn best when i see visuals or i do hands on activities. I also think that Atticus is a good teacher to his children because he practically teaches them everyone is the same and its not bad to be friendly to the blacks even though everyone else around you think that it is bad. I think getting an education is very important so you can get an education, like Tyler, his importance is Ag. mine perhaps is not, likewise i am more interested in band, I would like to get into something with music. Because people may think that the blacks are going to become smarter then they are and they will get the better jobs, which also isn't true.

  4. i also agree with tyler in just about everything he said. i like the way aticus teaches like he sayed and about the hands on learning. also i agree with his thought about the whites being afraid of there jobs, and they didnt want the colored to come close to equal to them.

  5. I agree a lot with the conclusion about education and learning in this book. I think that Atticus is a great teacher to his kids and teaches them good morals, but I also think he is doing them some harm. He is teaching his kids his own opinions and knowledge while at the same time, they are going to school where they learn things from Miss Caroline. This can be very confusing to young children because both adults way of teaching is very different. I think Atticus's way is a lot better than Miss Caroline's because he teaches them right from wrong no matter what other people say or think. I love the education I recieve here at Sioux Center High School, and I think the other students do as well. I think our school provides everything we need for a great future, and provide a great curriculum. I also like it because the teachers have multiple ways of teaching. Some are more visual while others are more explanatory and they like to mix it up a lot to help out students who learn better with a certain type of teaching. The whites in this time period were afraid of african americans getting an education because they knew they had the potential to over power them and take over all the white's jobs. I think this is also happening to American now with China, but I think that this time we should handle it more differently instead of denying the education of a certain race.

  6. I agree because it is always good that a father can teach his children the stuff he learned in his life because that can be a major impact in a kids life. I believe Atticus is a good teacher and roll model because he is teaching him what he knows and learned. I learn best when i am getting hands on and pictures. My education at Sioux Center is very important because it will help me with college choices. I believe the whites were afraid because they thought the blacks were going to start to take over everything. I agree with carri how Atticus is a great teacher but he is also teaching his kids stuff that the teacher might not want the kids to know yet.

  7. It is very hard to find something to help you in prove in the learning process, most kids don’t discover it until their 8th or freshman year… I have found that yes I do learn good with hands on but I also do better with independent working, it all depends on the person… and the attention span …(lol) :P. I also think that Atticus is a good teacher because he knows Scouts strengths and weaknesses so he can help her improve in her problem areas… I also do not think that school should not be based on sympathy, from what I have been through in my life, and the schools that I have been too I have learned personally that it sucks when people try to give you things because they feel bad…. Especially in school… when I lived in North Carolina a lot of my grades I got were brought up from what they actually were, it sucked because I thought I was doing good and I had improved until one of my teachers had confirmed that it was true that they were fixing them… but as she said “It’s so you don’t have to deal with so much and we don’t think you will improve anytime soon” as you can imagine my parents were mad. So no I don’t agree with the school revolved around sympathy.

  8. I would have to say I disagree a little with everyone because although Atticus is a good father I don’t think that he spends enough time with his kids some of the things they need... academically yes I think he’s good there but with other things I think could be improved... all he thought the kids really is do what you want just don’t get caught or you'll be in trouble.

  9. i would agree. i learn best when teacher's demonstrate it out, rather then letting me do it without knowing how to do it. I agree Atticus is a good teacher because he teaches the kids respects and good behavior that kids should be taught when they are young. I think education that i receive from S.C.H.S is comendable. Not every school is like Sioux Center, some school you have to pay for classes. I say what Sioux Center High gives students, students should be lucky to have what they have, and not complaining about it, because other schools are different. Whites were afraid that blacks where going to take over their jobs, and they couldnt support their family.

  10. I would disagree with taylor about atticus not being a good father. Because he helps them out and educates them so in the future they would use them like they did in class when the teacher was suprised they already knew how to write and read. Thats good that they know how to, because they could take it to a higher level and succeed. Even though Atticus is busy with things i think he is a good father because he helps them out and tries to help his children's as much as possilbe.

  11. To the point people need to be pushed but not all are the same you need to sympathetic with some people. When I learn happens when I don’t now the subject and I can get into it by seeing or doing it. Atticus being a lawyer and a father he can teach in a different way based on his expiries with older people. To be able to go to school it cool but when I come I want to get out. In my head I now that it will help me in my life and I will keep going until I can’t do it anymore. When people go from serving you to having rites you are afraid they will grow stronger then you and make you serve them.

  12. I think that Atticus is a good teacher because he taught his kids how to read and write and the reason he is a good teacher is because his kids are way ahead of the other students in the class so Atticus must be doing something right with his teaching. I think my education here at Sioux Center High School is important because it will help me for what I am going to be doing for the rest of my life. I also think that the whites were affraid of the blacks getting an education because they might do better than the whites and might get the jobs that the whites want, or the blacks would try harder and succeed more and it would be embarrasing to the whites to get beat by a black.

  13. If you are a mean punisher, the children will obey you because they are afraid of you and what you might do to them. If you are sympathetic, the children will listen to you because they respect you and your actions. I learn best when I can see and do hands on activities and when we're talking about something that is interesting to me. I think Atticus is a good teacher because he has expierence and has been there and done that when he was a child. What I learn in high school is very important to me because it will help me in college and help me get a good job someday. The whites thought it was wierd for black to get an education so they were afraid of them.

  14. I agree with Koleby and Tyler because I like the way Atticus teaches with hands on learning. I like hands on learning because it helps me viualise what I have to do and how to do it. I also like visual learning.

    ReplyDelete
  15. I agree with Peter in that most of us learn best with hands on activities and that Atticus teaches with respect and kindness.

  16. The conclusion about learning and education is a very good conclusion and i strongly agree with it! For me the best learning situations are when i have a good visual and I can have the hands-on learning experience. I believe that Atticus is a good teacher but i agree with Carrigan that it could be harming to his children because they will only have one way of thinking and that's his way. Obviously Atticus is a good teacher though because Scout is a first grader grader and knows vary well how to read. My education at sioux center is vary important to me. I feel like it is preparing us all for our future whether we go to college 0r do something else. They were afraid of the blacks becoming educated because the blacks were inferior to the whites and them getting an education would make them more even with the whites. Also, they didn't want blacks to have there jobs.

    ReplyDelete
  17. I think the best way of learning is through hands on. I personally learn better from peers and through situations that go on where something goes wrong and you have to fix it. I think that Scout is learning better from Atticus and Calpurnia due to her personal realationships with them. It is easier to learn when you can relate with the person. I think that education in school today is very important becuase jobs are becoming harder and harder to support the needs of the growning population. If people don't care about their education, then our generation is going to get nothing accomplished and the world will not keep advancing. I think that people were afriad of the blacks getting an education becuase they didnt' want them to take their jobs and "take over" everything that is happening. They want to remain the superior race.

  18. I agree with Carol when she said that she has to have a visual and Hands-on learning. I also believe with her when she said to have another persons outlook on learning so she could get different opinions.

  19. Peter Im not saying that he is a bad father, im just saying that he thinks there such good kids and have good manners, they also sneak around ... thier being desiteful and he is kida not seeing it and i feel like there could be more he could do

  20. Atticus is doing a good job as a father because he's teaching Jem & Scout how to respect others and how to treat everyone equally. The best way I personally learn is by getting a visual image & sometimes depending on the subject simply just note taking. Everyone one has different ways of learning now in days. It is important for everyone to have their own way of learning because education today is very important. A couple examples would be getting into a good college, getting a well paid job, even sometimes people want a better education or more education just so their race looks better then others. I feel that the world we live in today doesnt have much of that problem because our world is so advanced in many different ways. Back then education was a problem because whites wanted to be the best/didnt want compition or simply just have someone to look down on.

  21. I think a lot of the education and learning things in this book are great. Atticus is a good teacher because he is teaching the kids many good things like reading and writting. That's why i think Atticus is way better at teaching than Miss Caroline. I like the education here in SCHS mostly everyone i think does like the education here. We have great teachers and they teach us many things and help us out to be able to keep up and keep trying our best until we graduate. In my opinion, I think the Whites in the 1930's were afraid of the blacks because they probably thought the blacks would completely take over and get better education than them or even just succeed much more than others.

  22. I agree with Anna on how she personally can learn better with help from other peers. & I also agree with Carol about learning hands on because that's how i like to learn things also.

    ReplyDelete
  23. I agree with this way of education and learning because I learn best if the teacher is kind, patient and explains and shows you how to do something hands on. Atticus is a good teacher because he relates well with his kids and just reads with them. Miss Caroline is a bad teacher because she scolds Scout for knowing how to read already. Teachers should compliment you for being ahead of the game not get angry and tell you to stop. I believe my education at Sioux Center High School is pretty important because I can take some of the classes that will help me with my future career and other classes that will help with other things like working as a team. I think the reason that whites didn't want blacks to get an education was because they were afraid the blacks would become smarter than they were and take some of the career opportunities away from them.

  24. I agree with Ross when he says that if you are mean, kids will be afraid of what you might do and therefore listen, and if you are kind and sypathetic, the kids will respect you and listen. However, I believe being sympathetic and gaining the children's respect is a better way of teaching for me anyways. I also agree with Anna when she said that the reason for whites not wanting blacks to get an education was based on racism.

  25. Education is very important, not only for children, but for everyone. If you don’t have a good education, then you will not be able to get very far or achieve very many things in life. I agree with the conclusion of education and learning, and how the children are taught in the book is very significant. Calpurnia and Atticus try to teach the children about key things like reading and writing that will improve their knowledge of things such as not being judgmental of skin color. People like Miss Caroline should not try to tell the children that they should stop learning because education is what opens new doors. At the Sioux Center Community Schools, education is very important to everyone which is why our school has a higher level of learning. I really enjoy being able to attend Sioux Center High School because my education is very important to me and the teachers really help by making the process easier. In the 1930’s, the whites were really afraid of the African Americans receiving an education because they thought that if they were given the opportunity to learn, that they might end up becoming smarter than them.

  26. I disagree with Brenda because even though there are a lot of job opportunities and good ways to get an education now days doesn’t necessarily mean that people are going to reach their full potential that they should. They won’t do this because people have become really lazy, and even though are a lot of great things that they can achieve doesn’t mean they will always go for it. I also agree with Carrigan because the teachers at Sioux Center give us a variety of ways for learning because everyone is different. They know that some people learn better by hearing things and others learn better by watching.

  27. I agree that, if the teacher is flexible, then people are more apt to learn;however, if the teacher is too flexible, then most of the people will learn very little. In my opinion, Atticus is a good teacher for his children, but I do not have an opinion on how he would do if he was teaching more people. The education in Sioux Center is important to me. I believe that whites did not like the blacks getting an education because it made them seem closer to equal than they wanted.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I disagree with everyone's assumption that the people were afraid of the blacks taking job opportunities. In that time if it was a decision between a black person or a white person, the white person would have gotten the job because to them, every white person, no matter how bad they are, is better than a black person, no matter how good they are. Rather, I believe that it is more of an issue of pride that whites can read, and blacks can not.

  29. I think education is very important for every person. I think good education helps you get a better job and may help you succeed in other things in life. I agree very much with the conclusion of educating and learning. Atticus is a good example to them about teaching them how to read but is saying to much about his own opinions. The education at Sioux Center High School is very important. And a white was scared if African American got an education because they may think they are smarter and may also get some better ideas.

  30. I agree with Gaby how she said Atticus is a good teacher, because i also think he is teaching them good and is just helping them out!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I agree but also disagree with Taylor. I agree because he is a very good teacher acedemically, but I still think he is a great father as well. What else can he do when he has to work all the time just so that he can provide food/clothing for his children? How else is he supposed to give them what they need?

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think education is needed for someone to have sucess in there life. I think that Atticus is a good teacher because he teaches his kids not to hate on others because of there color. Atticus and Calpurnia put together are better teachers than Miss Caroline because they teach Jem and Scout how to read rite. There teach in a way that is easy to understand for Scout and Jem.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I Agree with Gaby and Jasmine Popovich because i do think that white were scared of blacks and the blacks being better than them. That is why they always picked on the blacks and beat them up so the blacks would lose cofident and who live life with fear. I also work better with hands on activities and learn visuall as Jasmine Popovich said

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think the ways of education both can work, just depends on the person. To me, having someone that relates to me helps me understand it more. I think that Miss Caroline's ways of teaching may work very good on certian people. To be i wouldnt necessarily like that. I don't think you can say that there is a right or a wrong/dangerous way of teaching. If someone can relate something to my life or to me, then I can better learn. If, for example, its just a bunch of reading and questions, I memorize, and don't learn. Applying what I know to life helps me learn. I believe that Atticus is a good teacher because he is a well-educated man that helps the kids understand. I feel the education I recieve in Sioux Center is EXTREMELY important because it is helping me build a foundation for my furture. I don't want to be running around like a maniac. My education will help me go on to more schooling, and eventually to a job to support myself. In the 1930's was the great depression. People were broke. Whites were becoming poor, but to make themselves feel better, they looked down on the blacks. If the blacks recieved education, they could eventuall earn more money, and the white people would be at the bottom. Therefore, because of the Great Depression, the whites were scared that the blacks would become educated and take their jobs.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I disagree with Anna because i do not think that Scout is learning better from them because of their relationship. I think she learns better from them because of their teaching style. The teacher could try relating to her, so I disagree with that statement made. Anna, how does your education affect you? not everyone else. I agree with Anna's statement about the whites not wanting the blacks to have education.

  37. I agree with this education and learning because by understanding on what you are doing and then doing a test on what you know is a good way of learning and understanding on what you are talking about. I learn best when I’m in a group of people and when I’m by myself so I can understand it better. I think Atticus is a good teacher because he is helping his kids become role models and being leaders. He is also a good teacher because he is always watching his kids and making sure they are safe. It is very important that you get a education so then you can go to college. If you didn’t get an education then you wouldn’t be able to go to college and you wouldn’t be able to get a good job. I think whites were so afraid because they would think if African Americans received an education they would get more money than the whites.

  40. Yes i agree with the cnclusion of education and learning because it is good to to learn things and know things. I learn best with hands on activities and visual so i can see whats going on and so i know what is going on. Yes i agree that Atticus is a good teacher becasue he teaches his kids everything he knows and he also reads to them everynight so they know how to read. the education aot our school is very important becasue we need education to go to a good college and so people will like you and trust you. Whites were scared that african americans were getting education because they thought that they would be smarter than them.

  41. I agree with the teachings and learning in this book. Miss Caroline way of teaching is kinda how they teach today with simple words on a card. Everyones teachings is different and you gotta learn which one you like better. Education here is very important to me to build my future.

  42. I agree with Tyler. I myself am a visual and hands on activies to learn better. Everyone is different and has go find there comfort zone.

  43. I agree with this education of learning because Atticus knows what he's talking about and teaches his kids well. Every teacher is also different to every student though and every teacher teaches differently. Our education that we get in Soiux Center is taught very well and we all recieve good education for the future we are looking at. I think whites were afraid of African Americans because they thought their jobs would get taken over by them.

  46. I agree its easier to learn when your not being yelled at and the person that is teaching you understands you and is sympthetic to you. I think that aticus is a very good teacher. He gets his kids and explains things to them. My education at Sioux Center High School is important to me, but ya im hitting some ruff times in my life and everything is getting harder but my education is important to me. Also I think that the whites back then were scared of the African Americans getting education because they were scared they would lose their jobs to them.

  47. I agree with Maddie. All teachers are different, for example Mrs. Den Herder teachs different then Mrs. Sheperd. Some teachers have the same technice but not all do.

  48. i agree with the way he teaches. i dont learn well when people are yelling at me or just being sturn. some people like that but i think i would rather just be tought calmly. if people get mad and yell at me when iam learning i get mad and not really particapate and listen anymore durning class. and like scout i would like to just quit tring.i think that atticus was good to put himself in other peoples shoes. it helps to look at a differnt point of view. he even told the kids to put themselves in the radleys which was a good way to tell them to stop other than just getting mad and yelling. my education here is really important to me because it starts me on my future and help prepare me for my college and other things i might come across. i think that people didnt want them to have an education because they were scared they would end up being smarted than the whites, and that wouldnt be liked since they are supost to be way different from/better than the blacks.
