#4: Boo Radley
At this point, what do you believe (and how would you characterize) Boo Radley? What do you think Harper Lee (the author) wants us to believe? Is Boo a victim or a "monster" as described by the children's conjecture? Why do you think so? What are your assumptions about what has really happened with and to Boo? What are your predictions about how Boo will fit into this story? Use the text to help you draw your conclusions.

I would characterize Boo Radley as a "Ghost", Shy, not wanting to be around everything, like all the drama that goes on between the blacks and the whites. I think Harper Lee wants us to believe that he just is kind of like a Hermit in a way, never going or coming out of his house. Boo is kind of both because some think he has gotten killed so that way he would be a victim but then on the other hand some people think that he is a ghost and haunts people at night, so that way he would be considered a "monster". I think he would rather just be alone and stay out of all the drama between the races. I think that Boo will eventually show himself some where some how and people are just going to be so shocked that all their little "Gossip" that goes around the town of Maycomb.
ReplyDeletei would characterize boo as a loner. when i say loner i mean someone who is always by themselves and diong things alone, but who likes bieng alone and not hanging with all different poeple. i think the auther wants us to wonder what he is diong with his life cuz that makes us wanna read more and more which makes it a great book. i think the kids just think that because they have big emaginations just like every kid in this world.i think boo will come out in the end and be a hero or something.
ReplyDeletei agree with jasmine about boo and how he just wants to be alone all the time. i also agree with her about what she thinks the auther wants us to think about boo.he is not a monster either he just wants to be alone and no one really knows him very well in maycomb.
ReplyDeleteI would characterize Boo as the type of person who has a totally different personality than everybody thinks. I think Boo is actually a nice, loving guy who is just waiting to "come out of his shell". I think the author wants him to be a mystery to us, and wants us to kind of think of what type of person he seems to us. I think at the beginning the author wants us to believe that he is the monster, but as we're getting more into the book we are seeing a whole new side of him and noticing that he has maybe just always been the victim. I think Boo was just a boy who developed maybe a disablity of some sort or some kind of flaw that made him stay in the house. He also might just be the type of person who always like to be by himself. I think Boo is embarrased to come out, but is really starting to get out of his comfort zone and will sooner or later in the book, come out and show us who he really is. I think Boo was put into this book to show us even another type of person. Not an african american, not a poor family, not the whites, but a shy, embarrased, and maybe disabled young man. I also think he might do something heroic or make a difference in the lives of the Finches.
ReplyDeleteI would characterize Boo Radley as a shy guy who doesn’t want to see anybody because if anybody saw him they might judge him on what he might look like. That’s why I think he’s not coming out of the house. I think the author wants us to believe that he is really a nice guy and fun to talk to. I think this because he’s keeping things to himself and just wants to get through what he did. I think Scout, Dill, and Jem will get Boo out and they will try to talk to him and make him feel good. I think Boo will do something great at the end of the story and everyone will start liking him.
ReplyDeletei agree with koleby and Carri because i think boo is also charcterized as a loner because he never comes out of the house and dosent care about anyone else. I agree with Carri because i think Boo is really a nice guy but nobody thinks this because he dosent come out of the house and dosent talk to anyone.
ReplyDeleteI think Boo is characterized as a person that wants to be alone and no one wants to be around because he is no fun. I think harper wants us to believe that he did something very wrong and is getting punished for what he did. I dont think boo is either maybe more a victim of something but i dont really know what to think of him yet. I think Boo is going to come into the story and tell about what happend but he is going to come in slow and start peeking out of windows and just be very shy. I agree with carri and kyle how he is a very shy guy and Harper is just making him a mystery right now for us.
ReplyDeleteI think that he is just scared to come out or that he is not allowed... to me it seems like he is being kept in... maybe for protection or maybe because other reasons that we don't know... or maybe there is something wrong with him who know... but i predicted that by the end of this book he will be good friends with the other kids..
ReplyDeleteI would characterize Boo Radely as a Ninja, you see him and sometimes you dont. I think the author wants us to question things, and wonder about why Boo Radely is mostly hidden in his house and pownder things about him.In the book they think Boo Radely kills him mom, and is a freaky wierd kid. I think they say that because he barely shows the real Boo Radely, he is mostly locked in his house which people assume things about him. My assumptions about Boo Radely would be that he just a quiet person and doesnt like to go out, like a loner. I think Boo Radely will fit into the story as the supriseing person, like a birthday party where everyone hides and suprises you. I think at the end he will be the suprising present.
ReplyDeleteI would agree with everyone because we know Boo Radely is a loner or some type of kid who doesnt show up much right now and nobody know much about him, only the fact that he's locked up in his house.
ReplyDeleteBoo is a un known being. She wants the reader to think and make their own ideas of him and his past. He can be both a monster that has served his time and hasten been let out. After the dad died he still never came out. He did something doom and got so scared that he would not come out a gene. Boo will be a friend in the end and he will tell his true story.
ReplyDeleteI think Boo Radley is a loner kind of because he never goes around anyone or interacts with anyone. But I also think that he is not a ghost or monster because it is his choice to not be around anyone or interact. He is the one who chooses not to socialize with anyone.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Jasmine because I don't think he is a "ghost" because he is the one who doesn't want to be around people and do things with people. I believe that it is his choice to stay home and not come outside and interact with the people in the town.
ReplyDeleteI think Boo is a sheltered person, who wants to get out and see the world, but his family won't allow it. I think that he would be an outgoing person if he was allowed to do things. I think that the author wants us to believe that he is a shy person who doesnt want to come out of the house. I think Boo is a victum, becuase his fate was chosen by his family and he never had the chance to live the life he wanted to live. I think Boo will come out of the house and live the life he wants to live and tell what had happened to stop all of the rumors that were started and be a friend to everyone.
ReplyDeleteI agree with carrigan when she said the author wants boo to be a mystery to us until something happens that needs him to "come out" and do something.
ReplyDeleteI think Boo Radley is very secretive and very shy. That he can't come out and associate with other children. I think he was a monster as a kid and is now a victim of his action for stabbing his mother and what his parents had done before him. I think Boo is suffering from mental pictures of his mom's stabbing and might mentally collaspse in public. I think Boo will sneak out of the house and tell everyone what really happend.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Anna that Boo is over protected and wants to go into the world but his family won't allow him to leave.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, i think Boo Radley is a very shy type of person, but at the same time just seems like he hides who he is. I think the authos wants us to see him as a shy person who is just always inside his home. I don't think he is a ghost or even a monster because maybe he just doesn't want to be out like everyone else. We can't judge him just because of that. He's just different in his own way and there's nothing wrong with that.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Carrigan. The author just wanted to make this book much more interesting and i like myestery type of books. So maybe later on he will finally come out and show who he really is and surprise everyone by maybe being someone totally opposite of what everyone thought he was.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion I believe Boo Radley is a victim of his father's abuse even though he did something wrong that made him get punished. However, the children in the story kind of describe him as a monster because they never see him and use their imaginations to come up with rumors about him. I believe that Boo's father scared him so much that he doesn't even want to come back outside. This is sort of a good way to punish someone but also not because now Boo probably has no social skills which is part of the reason he doesn't want to come out. I believe Boo will come out at some point in the story and talk to Scout and the other children.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Gaby when she said that Boo just wants to hide who he is. I believe he wants to do this because he is embarassed about what he did and what his dad did to him to punish him. I also agree with her when she said that Boo is just different in his own way becuase you shouldn't judge people and start rumors about what you don't know.
ReplyDeleteI think that the author wants people to believe that Arthur Radley is a person who is never seen, and doesn't like to be around people; however, my idea of Arthur is that he is neither a victim, or a "monster". The most likely reason that he doesn't come out is that he is anti-social, and doesn't know anybody outside the house. Arthur most likely enjoys watching Scout, Dill, and Jem play because he laughed when they rolled Scout into his yard. My prediction is that they will talk to Arthur in, or outside his house. I do not know why this will be important, but it will be critical during the storyline is some way.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with Kyle because I don't think he is afraid of what he looks like, but is rather comfortable sitting inside the house watching the world go by him, and does not feel like talking to people because he does not know anybody.
ReplyDeleteI would characterize Boo nice guy just waiting to meet his friends that will treat him right. I think the author wants Boo to be like a ghost to us and wants us to think what will happen next. I picture Boo more as a victim rather than a monster. I think he wants to act like him self and not have to worry about what others think of him. But i think he will soon come out and end up talking to his neighbors.
ReplyDeleteI agree with jasmine because how she thinks Boo is a "ghost". But i disagree with how Harper trying to tell her how he is not going to go out of his house. I think he eventually will come out it will just take time for Boo.
ReplyDeleteI like Peter's way of characterizing Boo as a "ninja". I think the author is trying to portray him as mysterious which is exaclty like a ninja with the black mask/suit on and everything.
ReplyDeleteEven though people are really quiet and don’t like to talk doesn’t necessarily indicate that they are mean or scary people, it just may indicate that they don’t really know how to get the courage to come up to some random person and be really social. The way that I would characterize Boo Radley is that he was a boy who was never really taught how to be social and talk to people so he wouldn’t really know if he should approach someone, or if he would approach someone when or how he would do it. In my opinion, I would say that Boo is not actually a “monster” as the children would describe him, but he is more of a person that may not quite understand the situation he is in and he doesn’t know if he should come near strangers. The house that the Radleys live in is really dark and scary looking, but it doesn’t mean he has to be a frightening person like how the children would describe him. I think that Boo will end up being one of the nicest people that we will meet in the book, and that he will be a really good role model to follow. So in saying this, I really feel that Boo will be a really good character in the book, and he will end up be totally different than what everybody expected.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ty in the way that he says that he thinks Boo was abused by his father, and how he is afraid of everything and everyone. This would have made him not ever want to talk to any, especially strangers. What if people actually thought Boo still lived with his father, but he was actually someplace far away so he would never be seen or heard of again? I get this feeling that we are either going to meet Boo and he is going to be super nice, or we are never going to hear of him again.
ReplyDeleteI see boo Radley as a misterious person.Nobody nows anything or barely anything about him. He keeps to himself and dosent go out much. I think the arthur wants us to think that hes a monster because of the way she discribes him and how she talks about him.I think at the end of this book boo Radley will come up and Maycomb people are gonna like him for somthing he did.
ReplyDeleteI agreee with peter about him being a ninja because u dont really see him and sometimes you do i disagree with jasmine popovich because i thing the arthur is trying to make us see that boo is a monster
ReplyDeleteI found peter way of thinking cool and it cud be tru. his idia was or cud be rill.
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion Boo is a victim not a monster because we just know him by rumors that have been told about him & also we havent heard his side of the story. I find it not fair for Boo to be held back from his family because of the mistakes he has made. Hes a kid like Scout & Jem and should put himself out in the world. I predict that Boo will later on tell someone about what really went on.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Angie about the author describing Boo as a monster and what not but i think shes only doing that so we can have our own opinions on what we have been told about him so far.
ReplyDeleteI think boo would be characterized as being lonely and shy. I think that Harper Lee wants us to believe that Boo is still alive and that he's not a terrible person. The kids think of Boo as a scary killing monster because of the way that they play Boo Radley. I think that Boo was stuck in the house by his father so long that eventually he just became afraid of the world! I believe that Boo will come into this story and be some sort of hero.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Ty when he said that Boo was a victim of his fathers abuse. That is the reason why he is scared of the world.
ReplyDeleteTo me, Boo is an invisible guy that no one really knows, so there is a lot of rumors on what kind of person he is. It could be very wrong in their thinking just because they dont know him. I think i kind of sterotype him because he is so shy and quite i think that he is kind of a mean and unfriendly person. From what i have read so far, he seems kind of like a monster because all he does is stay locked up in his house. When the kids go to the house and see shawdows or something, it is really creepy. I think maybe because of his past he is scared of what other pepole will think of him, so he may just not want to go and face other people outside of the comfort of his home. I think Boo was put in the book because eventually he will come out and show who he really is. He is just an other example of a type of person in the south Harper Lee wants us to know about.
ReplyDeleteI agree with carol about Boo being lonely and shy. But im not quite convinced that he is not a terrible person. I agree with tthe statement about what the kids believe about Boo. I stongly agree with what carol said about Boo being scared of the world after being stuck in the house for so long. I agree that eventually boo cuold become a hero in this boook
ReplyDeleteI would characterize Boo Radley as a ghost or someone who we have heard about but haven't seen come into the story yet. Boo isn't a monster as they believe because he hasn't done anything bad and the things they say are just rumors or stories that they think is true. I think Boo Radley will come out as a character everyone won't think he is.
ReplyDeleteI believe Boo Radly is old and does not want to come out of the house or do anything. I think she wants us to believe that he does not want to be noticed and that he just dosent want oto come out. I think Boo is a monster becasue i think he looks like one because hes stuck inside the house. What really happened to Boo myabe noone really knows and i think that he will never come out.
ReplyDeleteI believe Boo Radly just doesnt like being around other people. I think he is so used to being by himself and being left alone, that he likes it now. But I think everyone thinks he is a monstor or a bad guy because they have never seen him and hears rumors about him, and they think thats true. I think that he will eventually show himself.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jamie Mora. They dont know if ths stories/rumors are true or not but they believe them anyways and believe he is a monstor when he hasnt even done anything.
ReplyDeletei dont think that boo is a monster i just think that he is not social. i think that harper wants us to see the innocence of him yet she wants us to know that the people that live in the town think of them as monsters. i think personaly that boo is a nice guy but is kept in the house by his older brother. i think that boo would come out at fist but now is scard. i would also think that maybe he has been brainwashed that the outside world is full of bad things and he sould never come out. i dont think he is really bad at all and most things are rumors!
ReplyDeletei agree with kolbey when he said that he is just lonely. i dont think that he is bad just super lonely. i would picture him just in his house all alone. i would agree with that!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Angie because Boo Radley is mysterious and nobody barly knows anybody about him.
